The Benefits of Dental Sealants!

What are Dental Sealants?

Sealants are thin protective coatings painted on the biting surfaces of the premolar/molars to prevent tooth decay. Food and bacteria can get stuck in the grooves where the toothbrush bristles won’t be able to reach. This may lead to a cavity on the chewing surface of the tooth.

Why Seal Deep Pits and Fissures?

Dental professionals place sealants to protect your teeth from disease-causing bacteria. Your premolar/molar have deep grooves that help you grind up food when you chew. Food and bacteria can become trapped in these grooves, leading to cavities over time. Sealants seal/cover these areas so bacteria can’t reach them.

What are Dental Sealants Made of?

  • Resins (plant or synthetic).

  • Glass ionomers (glass powder combined with a water-soluble acid).

What to Expect During the Procedure?

  1. The tooth is cleaned by your dentist or hygienist with a pumice paste and a rotating brush. It is then washed and dried.

  2. An acidic solution will be placed in the chewing surface of the tooth for a few seconds to enhance retention of the sealant material. Then, it is washed with water again and dried.

  3. Dental sealant material is then placed in the grooves and light-cure is used to harden the material just like dental composite restorations.

  4. The dental profession will check the height of the sealant and if feeling high will polish it down.

What Can You Expect for Your Child After the Procedure?

Your child's bite may slightly feel different after placement of sealants based on the material used, and that is normal. The bite will adjust after a few days. It is okay to eat and drink immediately after sealant placement and there are no special precautions. Sealants are not permanent but can last 5-10 years. Throughout time sealants may need to be touched up.
