How to Protect Your Teeth in The Winter

Many illnesses such as colds and coughs emerge during colder months, including oral issues too!

Your teeth are used to your normal body temperature, so changes to the temperature in the environment will more or less cause discomfort in the mouth. However, if you do experience pain consistently lasting more than a few days, be sure to contact your dentist in case of any other underlying issues.

So how can I protect my teeth?

  1. Wear a Mouth guard: If you participate in cold-weather sports or activities like skiing or snowboarding, consider wearing a mouth guard. A mouth guard can help protect your teeth from injury during falls or impacts.

  2. Keep Your Mouth Closed: Breathing through your nose and keeping your mouth closed when it's cold outside can help reduce the exposure of your teeth to cold air. Cold air can exacerbate tooth sensitivity.

  3. Avoid Hot and Cold Food/Drinks: When transitioning from cold outdoor temperatures to a warm environment, avoid consuming hot or cold food and drinks immediately. Extreme temperature changes can lead to tooth sensitivity.

  4. Use a Sensitive Toothpaste: If you have sensitive teeth, consider using a toothpaste specifically designed for sensitive teeth. These toothpastes can help reduce tooth sensitivity to cold.

  5. Maintain Good Oral Hygiene: Keeping your teeth and gums healthy through regular brushing, flossing, and dental check-ups is essential to prevent dental problems, including sensitivity.

  6. Stay Hydrated: Staying hydrated helps maintain saliva production, which plays a role in protecting your teeth. Dry mouth can increase the risk of tooth sensitivity.

  7. Limit Acidic Foods and Drinks: Acidic foods and drinks can weaken tooth enamel, making your teeth more susceptible to sensitivity. Limit your consumption of acidic items like citrus fruits and sodas.

  8. Consider Fluoride Treatments: If you're prone to tooth sensitivity, talk to your dentist about fluoride treatments or dental sealants. These can help strengthen and protect your tooth enamel.

  9. Bundle Up: Wearing a scarf or face mask in cold weather can help cover your mouth and protect it from direct exposure to cold air.

  10. Consult Your Dentist: If you experience persistent tooth sensitivity or other dental issues related to cold weather, consult your dentist. They can assess your condition and provide tailored recommendations or treatments.

Remember that maintaining good oral hygiene practices and taking precautions can help protect your teeth from the discomfort associated with cold weather. If you have specific dental concerns, it's best to seek advice from a dental professional.
