Any dental issue requiring immediate dental treatment in order to alleviate pain and discomfort or to save a tooth is considered an emergency. When you have a dental emergency, do not delay seeing a dentist, as waiting can potentially make the issue worse.

Below is a list of the most common dental emergencies we treat:

Gum pain

Gum pain can be a sign of irritation, infection, or injury to the gums and teeth.  Gum pain can often be a temporary symptom, but other times a person may require dental treatment to prevent further health complications.

Fillings or crowns dislodgement

A dental filling is a treatment used to restore the function integrity and morphology of missing tooth structure resulting from caries or external trauma. Crown dislodgement happens when sometimes the cement washes out from underneath  the crown. Not only does this allow the crown to become loose it also allows the bacteria to leak in and cause decay to the remaining tooth structure.

Toothache

Tooth pain is caused when the nerve in the root of the tooth is irritated. Tooth infection decay or injury or the loss of a tooth are most common causes. Pain may also occur after an extraction. Lux Dental team can help you to alleviate urgent toothache by offering a same-day dental emergency appointment.

Facial swelling

Facial swelling is a common symptom with a range of possible causes, including injuries, allergic reactions, and dental infections. An abscessed tooth is a tooth that has a pocket of pus in the tissues around it. Pus forms when the body tries to fight an infection caused by bacteria. If the pus cannot drain, it forms an abscess. An abscessed tooth can cause red, swollen gums and throbbing pain, especially when you chew. You may have a bad taste in your mouth and a fever, and your jaw may swell.

Damage to the tooth, untreated tooth decay, or gum disease can cause an abscessed tooth. An abscessed tooth needs to be treated by a dental professional right away. If it is not treated, the infection could spread to other parts of your body. Your dentist will give you antibiotics to stop the infection. You may need to have a root canal treatment, which tries to save your tooth by taking out the infected pulp and replacing it with a healing medicine and/or a filling. If these treatments do not work, your tooth may have to be removed.

Dental Trauma

Dental trauma is physical injury to the teeth, gums, the alveolar bone (the bone that holds the tooth sockets), or the soft tissue of the mouth, including the lips and tongue. Most cases of dental trauma are caused by accidents, including falls, vehicle collisions, and playing sports. Some cases are due to being involved in violent incidents, such as fighting or physical abuse. The treatment depends on the nature of the trauma. Injuries to the mouth and teeth should be examined by a dentist, especially if a tooth or teeth have become loose or sustained damage. In some cases, when a tooth is visibly damaged, the neighbouring teeth may also have injuries that are not necessarily visible unless detected by a dental exam.

Fractured tooth

Tooth fracture usually occurs due to traumatic injuries to the teeth and oral structures. An untreated tooth fracture can lead to pain infection or tooth loss. A crack in the tooth can be caused by chewing on hard foods biting down on hard objects being hit in the face. The predominant clinical features are sensitivity and pain in the fractured teeth. Depending on the degree of tooth fracture, management includes restoring the fractured tooth or root canal treatment in fractured teeth. In some severe cases, the fractured tooth may need to be removed to prevent infection.
